How would you describe your personal style? Currently in transition. I used to dress very girly, but have found myself wanting to look less and less palatable of late. I’m trying to find my way into a style that better reflects the sharp edges in me—something all my pretty florals and sweet colors wasn’t really doing.

How would you describe your personal style?
That’s such a tricky question! Throughout the years, I’ve tried so many different styles that my
style is a weird blend of every single style. I guess if I could try, I would say it’s basically Pretty
and Pink meets Clueless that meets The Craft.

Q) What made you want to make a difference in these women lives?

A) My sister, CEO and Co-founder Kristen, has spent a lot of time in Africa working with both telecommunication and non-profit sectors. She attended a mobile conference where she learned that mobile phones make a huge impact in people’s lives. She learned that people are able to receive mosquito net vouchers via telephones; farmers were able to access market prices for their crops through mobile phones, so they could make sure the buyer is giving them full value for produce. Additionally, she learned about micro-finance loans, which are also issued through mobile phones. Phone ownership allows women to pay loans by pressing a couple of buttons, rather than forcing them to travel to a loan officer which allows them to not lose business by having to close down for a day to make the trip. Healthier babies are also born when the mother has a phone. Doctors are able to send expectant mothers daily updates on what they can be doing to keep their baby healthy while in the womb.

According to a study by GSMA, women in Africa are much less like likely to own a phone compared to their male counterparts. The cost of a mobile handset is the number one barrier to phone ownership. One of the biggest challenges for us is to explain why it is so important for women in Tanzania to own a phone.

Name: Carly
Age: 18
City/Hometown: Jacksonville, FL
Occupation: Currently a student…but I’m also currently working as a social media manager at Olive Clothes online boutique!
If student, which school and major: I don’t have a major right now at my local state college FSCJ, but I plan to transfer to Parsons, or FIT and major in either Fashion Merchandising, or Fabric Styling!

How would you describe your personal style?
This is always such a difficult question for me. I love and appreciate all styles, so every day I enjoy trying something different. I guess I can best describe it as vintage with a modern twist. I really enjoy going for the classic-vintage styles and also very bohemian styles, they’re both equally me!
What is the inspiration for your looks? Usually the music I listen to, the movies I watch, and just photos that catch my eye. For instance I recently watched American Hustle, and I’ve been seeing a lot of the new Gucci ads with the glam 70s-inspired styles, so that’s the main style I’ve been into lately!

Where do you like to shop, and why?
I love Zara, Modcloth, Forever 21, H&M, but I also enjoy a lot of thrifting and vintage shopping!

UCOF Academy Celebrates Dreams with Fourth Annual Gala

NEW YORK, NY (October 15, 2014) – It has been a week since United Colors of Fashion Inc. celebrated the hard work of their students at their fourth annual Gala, at the historic Lexington Avenue Armory, New York. This year the Gala theme; “Paper Dreams: Writing New Runways,” paid homage to the dreams of the students, who are ultimately the driving force behind the mission UCOF Academy has to empowering youth through fashion education. It is the dreams they have written down on paper that will redefine the fashion industry of the future. In essence, they are now writing new runways, which will change fashion in ways as different as their dreams are. This year, the UCOF Gala was all about the students and in preparation for their fashion debut they presented their own collections on the night.

The students went through the year in training to build their own collections, which exceeded even their expectations. Throughout the entire experience the students learned in the areas of design, textile, marketing, fashion merchandising, management, business development, and event production, which have allowed them to showcase their spectacular collections last week.
